16 December 2008: VIC6 Project gains Neighbourhood Cable as Sponsor

NEWS RELEASE FROM IPv6 NOW PTY LTD

Neighbourhood Cable, a regional Victorian broadband provider, announced today that it would be sponsoring the VIC6 project, a testbed network being built by IPv6Now and Ai Group to help Victorian industry move to IPv6.

Ivan Slavich, CEO of TransACT Communications made the announcement at a gathering of Ballarat IT specialists, confirming that Neighbourhood Cable would be providing a two-megabit native IPv6 connection into the VIC6 node in Ballarat.

IPv6Now's George Fong presented Mr Slavich with a certificate of appreciation, and emphasised how important industry involvement was to the success of the project. "The time for IPv6 is now", he said. "The VIC6 testbed network is there to help businesses work out solutions and build confidence in the new technology. Solid connectivity to the IPv6 Internet is vital, and that's exactly what this sponsorship from Neighbourhood Cable represents."

Colin Littlejohn, Regional Manager of Neighbourhood Cable, said "We are part of the Neighbourhood here in Ballarat and are excited to be part of this project."

The VIC6 testbed network is slated for launch in March 2009.

Background to IPv6:
IPv6 is the next generation Internet protocol. It will eventually replace IPv4, which the Internet currently runs on, though there will be a period where both are in use. IPv4 addresses are expected to run out in about 2011. IPv6 uses a 128-bit address, meaning that it can provide an extraordinarily large number of addresses. See www.ipv6.org.au (which incidentally was the first IPv6-accessible website in Australia and is now hosted on an IPv6Now dual-stack server).
